Milestones

The NTU Solar Car Racing Team was established in 2006 when a group of final year students approached the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) with the idea of building a solar car to compete in the World Solar Challenge race.

With financial support from NTU’s College of Engineering and guidance of MAE professors, the dedicated and highly motivated team of students embarked on their solar car dream. The first solar car to roll out of production was dubbed the Nanyang Venture I – the first of a series of Nanyang Venture car that sparked the excitement and ambitions of many MAE students to come.

Over 30 students have been involved since its inception in areas such as aerodynamics, traction, solar cells and telemetry. These skill sets go beyond what students learn in the classroom and the hands-on experience is invaluable to their learning outcome.

It is a long and tedious journey that takes a student from the design and conceptualisation of the car to the actual race. Tight deadlines, troubleshooting problems and the pressure to perform well for the race are also a test of one’s perseverance and character.
