Charting the Seas: A Conversation with Captain Tan Kim Hock

In this feature, we speak with Captain Tan Kim Hock, who oversees the BSc programme in Maritime Studies at NTU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), to learn more about his maritime journey and reflections at sea.

What first sparked your interest in the maritime field?

"My deep desire to explore the world and experience diverse cultures sparked my interest in sailing, eventually inspiring me to pursue it as a professional career."

Which seafaring explorer inspires you the most?

"Ferdinand Magellan! His determination, courage, and vision changed the course of maritime history. Being the first to lead an expedition that circumnavigated the globe, Magellan's legacy reminds me that sailing is all about courage, discovery, and the spirit of exploration!"

If you could sail to any part of the world, where would it be?

"That would be Antarctica! The idea of navigating through icy waters to one of the most remote and untouched places on Earth really fascinates me. Antarctica represents the ultimate frontier of maritime exploration — harsh, mysterious, and inspiring."

What is a message from the sea you would like to convey to students?

"The sea teaches us resilience, teamwork, and adaptability, which are essential for survival and success in our maritime careers."

This feature is part of commemorating the Day of the Seafarer. Designated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the Day of the Seafarer highlights the challenges faced by those at sea, reminding us of the importance of fair treatment for all maritime professionals.
