BDC 2025: Showcasing Innovation in Structural Design at NTU

On 12 and 13 April 2025, students from various tertiary institutions across India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam showcased their engineering and design skills in the final round of the NTU Bridge Design Competition (BDC 2025). Participants developed innovative bridge structures aimed at solving real-world challenges.

Organized by the NTU Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Club, BDC is an annual international competition that offers students hands-on experience in structural bridge design, closely aligned with industry practices. BDC 2025 was conducted as a two-round technical case competition that simulates the tendering process in the construction sector.

In February 2025, a total of 172 teams participated in the preliminary round, where they were tasked with designing a virtual bridge model in accordance with technical specifications provided in a case scenario.

The top 70 teams were selected to compete in person at the NTU campus in the final round. Each team was required to construct a functional bridge using predetermined materials within a set timeframe. On the first day, teams had 6 hours to build a bridge using balsa wood and basswood, based on the Manggis Quirk River case study.

The second day involved bridge testing and a Q&A session to determine the top 10 teams for the grand final. These 10 finalists then underwent a final round of video presentations and Q&A sessions assessed by a panel of five judges.

The judging panel featured esteemed industry professionals and faculty member:

  • Mr. Adrian Hew, Associate (Transport & Infrastructure), WSP Consultancy Pte. Ltd
  • Dr. Shaun Yap, Scientist, Pan-United Corporation Ltd
  • Mr. David Tan, Associate Principal, Arup Singapore Pte Ltd
  • Dr. Yvonne YB Wong, Head of Design (APAC), Ramboll Pte Ltd,
  • Dr. Teoh Bak Koon, Senior Lecturer, NTU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Winners of BDC 2025:
  • Gold Prize: Vizyandru Logawa (Universitas Jember, Indonesia)
  • Silver Prize: Civil @PCU (Petra Christian University, Indonesia)
  • Bronze Prize: Baraga (Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Indonesia)
  • Consolation Prizes: KESATRIA (Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia) & Zenith (Muhammadiyah University of Malang, Indonesia)
  • Top 10 Finalists: Cerberus, Eureka, SPECTRA Doa Ortu, KDB-NTUVN
  • Best Design Award: The One (University of Indonesia)

The competition was a resounding success — kudos to the CEE Club BDC 2025 Committee and heartfelt thanks to our generous sponsors: Arup Singapore Pte Ltd, Building and Construction Authority, Pan United Corporation Ltd, Progress ABMS Pte Ltd, Ramboll Pte Ltd, and WSP Consultancy Pte Ltd.

It was a valuable learning journey for all participants, who gained deeper insights into structural engineering, built meaningful connections, and exchanged knowledge with peers from across the region.
