NTU-CEE Distinguished Seminar Series: Professor Wang Dongmin
About the Seminar
Topic: Silico-Aluminate Solid Waste-Based Cementitious Materials: Composition, Performances, Reaction Mechanisms, Standardization, and Applications in Marine Engineering
The cement industry accounts for approximately 12% of global carbon emissions, making the green and low-carbon transformation of the building materials sector an urgent priority. Meanwhile, China generates more than 10 billion tons of industrial solid waste annually, much of which faces significant challenges, including difficulties in utilization, substantial historical stockpiles, and low resource utilization rates. The large-scale substitution of conventional cement with aluminosilicate industrial solid wastes – such as fly ash, slag, and coal gangue – to produce low-carbon cementitious materials offers an important pathway for achieving synergistic benefits in carbon reduction, pollution mitigation, and resource utilization.
This presentation focuses on four key aspects of aluminosilicate solid waste-based cementitious materials: compositional design, reaction mechanisms, standardization, and engineering applications. First, based on alkali-sulfate synergistic activation and thermodynamic modelling, the dissolution–restructuring–polycondensation mechanisms of aluminosilicate glasses under the action of activators are investigated, and the formation mechanisms and performance regulation of major binding phases, including C-(A)-S-H and N-A-S-H gels, are elucidated. Second, the latest progress in establishing a standardization system for aluminosilicate solid waste-based cementitious materials is introduced, with particular emphasis on the development of the national standard Aluminosilicate Solid Waste-Based Cementitious Materials.
Finally, focusing on key engineering fields such as marine engineering, the potential applications of these low-carbon cementitious materials in major infrastructure projects are presented, providing theoretical insights and technical solutions for the high-value utilization of industrial solid waste and the green construction of major engineering projects.
