How Much of the Scientific Literature Is Generated by AI?

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how scientific literature is written.

Featured in Nature News, Nanyang Assistant Professor Richard She analysed thousands of biomedical research articles and found a sharp rise in detectable AI-generated text in papers published in 2025, compared to minimal presence in earlier years. In particular, 12.4% of 2025 papers analysed contained at least one passage classified as AI-written.

Using a transformer-based detection tool, Pangram, his study highlights the growing need for clear norms and policies to guide the use of generative AI in scientific communication, helping to safeguard research quality and integrity.
