An Australian technology entrepreneur used ChatGPT to develop a one-of-a-kind mRNA vaccine to extend the life of his dog diagnosed with incurable cancer. This case sparked Lianhe Zaobao’s interest in whether AI-assisted analysis may be lowering technical barriers in personalised cancer vaccine development.

SBS Associate Professor Melissa Fullwood shared her expert perspectives, noting that while the veterinary field offers greater flexibility for experimental or compassionate use, such cases do not directly translate to human healthcare. In human medicine, any new treatment must undergo rigorous clinical trials and regulatory approval to ensure safety and efficacy.

She also highlighted that this case should not be seen as a disruption of the medical system, but rather as an acceleration of an existing trend where patients use digital tools to explore health information. While this can support more informed and meaningful participation in medical decision-making, it also underscores the need for strong clinical communication between professionals and increasingly AI-informed patients.
