Embark on a journey to empower older adults to take charge of their health and wellbeing, built on a foundation of groundbreaking research. The "Health Coaching for Older Adults" training programme is a landmark initiative born from a three-year (2018-2020) research initiative led by Professor Theng Yin Leng. This foundational 2-day programme lays the groundwork for a comprehensive understanding of the unique needs and challenges of this population, and is designed to equip link workers, volunteers, and caregivers with the skills to support older adults in managing chronic conditions, enhancing their overall wellbeing, and achieving sustainable behavioural change through motivational interviewing techniques. Learn the core principles of health coaching, effective communication strategies, and essential skills to support older adults in adopting healthy habits, overcoming barriers to change, and achieving optimal health outcomes. This programme sets the stage as a foundation to the Health Coaching Techniques programme, setting you on a path to become a qualified health coach and make a meaningful impact in the lives of older adults. Upon completing the course, learners will acquire the following knowledge and skills:

• Comprehend the multifaceted aspects of ageing, enabling support for older adults' distinct needs and challenges.
• Design and implement personalized exercise program, enhancing physical function and overall health.
• Apply evidence-based nutrition strategies, promoting healthy eating habits and optimal wellbeing.

ModuleObjective 

Module 1
Healthy Ageing Fundamental

This module provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary exploration of gerontology, exercise science, and nutrition, equipping participants with a holistic understanding of healthy ageing. By integrating theoretical foundations, exercise strategies, and nutrition expertise, this module addresses the complex needs of older adults, empowering Health Coaches with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills.

Module 2
Foundational Health Coaching

This module employs a client-centered, evidence-based approach that empowers individuals to effectively manage chronic conditions, adopt healthy behaviors, and enhance overall well-being. By integrating principles from psychology, education, and healthcare, expert health coaches provide personalized guidance and support through compassionate listening, astute observation, and motivational interviewing. Through this process, care-recipients will be able to take ownership of their health journey and improve their quality of life.

      Module 3
      Empowering Caregivers in Effective Coaching Techniques

      This module empowers caregivers with essential coaching techniques, psychosocial support, and communication skills to rebalance their life responsibilities and provide effective care. By analyzing preferences and aligning them with course content, we uncover emerging health trends and provide personalized support for caregivers, ultimately enhancing the well-being of their loved ones. 

        Module 4
        Ethics and Professionalism in Health Coaching 

        This module empowers health coaches to understand and apply ethical principles and guidelines, including confidentiality, informed consent, and respect for autonomy, to maintain a professional relationship and provide high-quality support. Additionally, it guides health coaches to establish appropriate boundaries with the individuals they support, ensuring a safe and respectful coaching environment.

         

        Module 5
        Health Coaching in Psychological First Aid (PFA)

        In partnership with the Singapore Red Cross, a leading humanitarian organization, this module offers a comprehensive health coaching training programme that integrates PFA with evidence-based coaching techniques. Health Coaching in PFA offers a valuable complementary approach, addressing the critical intersection of physical and emotional health. Participants will gain the skills to provide holistic support, identify early warning signs, and respond with confidence to clients' immediate physical and emotional needs. 

        Module 6
        Health Coaching on Mental Health

        This module empowers health coaches with evidence-based techniques to support clients in achieving optimal mental well-being. By focusing on positive mental health, health coaches can help clients cultivate resilience, confidence, and a growth mindset, leading to a more fulfilling life. Furthermore, by delving deeper into the nuances of mental health, Health Coaching in Mental Health enables coaches to support clients in achieving long-term mental wellness and resilience.


        This programme is designed for learners working or intending to work across various sectors, including the healthcare industry and corporate functions such as human resources. It is also valuable for volunteers, caregivers providing support for their loved ones with chronic illnesses, and individuals involved with beneficiaries in health-related organizations.

        Additionally, those in HR or organizational roles who support employee well-being, or work with healthcare-related policies will find this programme beneficial.

        Professor Theng Yin Leng

        Executive Director, Ageing Research Institute for Society and Education (ARISE), Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information & Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Courtesy Appointment).

        Dr. Theng specializes in user-centred design, interaction design, and usability engineering. Since returning to Singapore over 20 years ago, she has secured research grants totaling over $13 million as a Principal Investigator (PI). These grants, awarded by A*Star, MOH, and NRF, have supported projects in telehealth, patient care, elderly care, and technologies. Dr. Theng has been involved in numerous research projects as a PI, Co-I, and collaborator, and has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences. Dr Theng is also the Lead PI for the curriculum design of the 2-day Health Coaching for Older Adults training programme and 4-day Health Coaching Techniques training programme.

         

        Professor Ho Hau Yan, Andy

        Professor of Psychology and Medicine, School of Social Sciences & Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine

        Dr. Andy H. Y. Ho is a multi-award-winning psychologist, social scientist, and educator specializing in thanatology, gerontology, psychotherapy, digital health, and community empowerment. He is the Past President of the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC), Board Director of the prestigious International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement (IWGDDB), and Director of Research at the Palliative Care Centre for Excellence in Research and Education (PalC).

        With over 20 years of full-time academic experience, Andy has successfully secured over SGD 30 million in competitive grants to conduct numerous empirical, translational, and participatory action research projects aimed at fostering active and compassionate citizenry. Since joining NTU in November 2014, he has been awarded, as Principal and Co-Principal Investigator, 25 major competitive research grants totaling SGD 15 million from prominent funding bodies, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, National Medical Research Council, National Arts Council, Tote Board, SG Enable, Temasek Foundation, and others.

        With over 30 years of diverse experience spanning Singapore and international landscapes, Falina leverages her expertise to drive meaningful impact. Holding a Master's degree in Skills and Workforce Development and a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and International Business, she excels in training, communication, leadership, and motivation across multicultural and multigenerational teams.

        As a results-driven leader with a passion for empowering others, Falina fosters a culture of continuous learning and skill enhancement. Her vision is to inspire individuals to unlock their potential, adopt a healthy mindset, and navigate progressive career paths. Falina is also certified in the WSQ Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP) and WSQ Diploma in Design and Development of Learning for Performance (DDDLP).

         

         

        Ms Tan Su-San

        Ms. Tan is a register nurse with a Master of Arts in Lifelong Learning who has devoted to the public health practice for two decades. To enhance commitment to behavioural changes that are necessary to improve one’s health outcomes in a sustainable manner with better rapport and engagement, Susan created EASY with Susan Health Coaching methodology - combining Motivational Interviewing (MI) with social learning theories. It provides clients with the CAR (Competence, Autonomy, and Relevance) to take personal responsibility of their health. Ms Tan is also a WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) and WSQ Diploma in Adult and Continuing Education (DACE) certified.

         

         

        Assistant Professor Paul Victor Patinadan

        Assistant Professor, School of Social Sciences

        Dr Paul Victor Patinadan is an accomplished academic with close to a decade of research experience in the field of health and wellbeing. He received his PhD in Psychology right here at NTU. Paul is also an Association for Death Education and Counselling (ADEC) certified Thanatologist and plays an active role in the Action Research for Community Health (ARCH) Lab NTU.

        As a mixed-methods researcher, he specialises in psycho-socio-spiritual interventions and therapies for wellbeing (with a particular interest in End-of-Life care and grief/bereavement facilitation for families), the development and implementation science of such interventions, and holistic education across stakeholders within care ecosystems. He has worked on several projects with a focus on clinical outcomes for various illness trajectories, community and critical health psychology, the medical humanities, and evaluative research for health organisations. These include investigating the health behaviours and personal narratives of patient and caregiver populations, co-developing a serious game for diabetic management, and evaluating the Singaporean National Advance Care Planning Programme. Paul’s most recent work, ’The Table to Console’ considers the role of food and the culinary arts for facilitating healing following the loss of a loved one. To date, he has participated in multiple international and local conferences and has been awarded with a number of honours.
