International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Southeast Asia: Symposium on Advancing Gut Microbiome Research

In November 2024, a team of four NTU Researchers comprising Prof Wang Yulan, Asst Prof Kazuyuki Kasahara, Asst Prof Tan Hwei Ee and Visiting Prof Patricia Conway participated in the ILSI Symposium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The team explored the gut microbiome’s role in metabolic health and the gut-brain axis, sharing insights into microbiome-based biomarkers, metabolomics, and therapeutic interventions. Discussions highlighted how gut microbiota influence metabolic and neurological functions, paving the way for future innovations in health and food sciences.
As part of the symposium, Professor Conway delivered an invited presentation on novel proteins, protein metabolism, and the gut microbiome. She highlighted the growing interest in alternative protein sources, driven by concerns over the sustainability of animal protein production, climate change, and antimicrobial resistance. Emerging alternatives include plant-based proteins, cultured meats, microbial fermentation, algae, and insect-derived proteins, each presenting unique technological and sensory challenges.
Two posters from the Conway Lab at SCELSE were also presented at the symposium, contributing to ongoing discussions on microbiome research and its applications in food and health sciences.
