Being at the Core of Education Research, Policy and Practice

Research in effective teaching and learning practices and their impact on student educational outcomes remain at the core of education research, policy and practice. For research to improve policy formulation, programme development, school and teacher improvements and to prepare students for the future, education research in Singapore needs to not only focus on learning and teaching in different subject-domains, and in diverse classrooms and contexts in and outside of Singapore schools, but also engage in understanding the multi-level influences across Singapore's social and educational ecology.

This requires contextually relevant, responsive, and rigorous knowledge generated through research conducted in our local classrooms, schools and communities that is of critical and direct use to stakeholders in NIE, MOE and schools, and which makes a distinctive contribution to the international research community.

It is proposed that research development and trajectory in system studies is necessary to continue to formulate and enact strategies to translate and disseminate findings that are relevant for policy decision-making, programme design, professional learning and systemic improvements.

Research Questions We Seek to Solve

What are the patterns of pedagogical practices in Singapore schools and across primary and secondary subject domains, and what factors account for these pedagogical practices?

What types of pathways do students take after leaving secondary school?

Have these pathways and transitions altered over time and across successive cohorts?

What impact does pedagogical practice have on student outcomes, taking into consideration student/classroom/school characteristics, and how can we identify opportunities for the improvement of pedagogical practices?

What are the key characteristics of successful school-to-work transitions across different cohorts of students?

Specifically, what types of student experiences and life events affect positive and negative outcomes, and when do these occur?

Programmatic Lines of Inquiry

a. Examining the nature and characteristics of curricular, pedagogical and assessment shifts in primary and secondary schools across a range of subject domains.

b. Longitudinal tracking of student life pathways and school to work transitions to examine extent to which education contributes to labour-market success.

c. Examining the role of schooling in determining educational attainment, occupational outcomes and social mobility.

d. Examining the interactions between education and occupational aspirations of young people, including describing the patterns and development of trajectories of aspirations and attainment.
