"Safeguarding Biodiversity in a Changing World"

Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate, environmental changes such as habitat loss, climate change, and overexploitation. As these threats increasingly interact, traditional conservation approaches that focus solely on protecting species and places are no longer sufficient. Here, I will discuss how conservation science is evolving to meet these challenges through research spanning expanding and improving protected areas, market-based mechanisms and community stewardship. Drawing on examples from Southeast Asia and global analyses, I will explore how advances in ecological modelling, remote sensing, and geospatial data are transforming our ability to identify conservation priorities and anticipate future risks. By bringing together advances in ecology, technology, and conservation policy, this seminar highlights how we can build more effective strategies to safeguard biodiversity in an increasingly uncertain future.

About the speaker:

Dr Zeng Yiwen is an Assistant Professor in Environment and Society at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, with a joint appointment between the Asian School of the Environment and the School of Social Sciences. Trained as an applied ecologist and geospatial modeller, his research sits at the intersection of conservation, climate change, and environmental policy, with a central focus on how biodiversity can be safeguarded in a rapidly changing world. His work examines how conservation and climate interventions can be designed, evaluated, and implemented to deliver meaningful ecological outcomes while remaining socially equitable and economically viable. Current research in his group spans protected area management, nature-based climate solutions, community stewardship, carbon and biodiversity markets, and human–wildlife conflict, with a particular emphasis on addressing the intertwined challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change.
