One of the most prominent public intellectuals in Singapore during the 1980s, Wu Teh-Yao is best known locally for his public advocacy of Nanyang University, his commitment to the preservation of Chinese culture, and his role in the state-led promotion of Confucian ethics. Yet, relatively little is known about his early life and academic trajectory—particularly his transnational educational background and professional life across universities from Southeast Asia, the United States, and Taiwan. This talk introduces how Wu’s trajectory as a Confucian intellectual in 1980s Singapore was shaped by his earlier experiences within Sino-American educational exchanges, specifically, his 17-year long tenure as president of Tunghai University in Taiwan. Drawing on ongoing research for an intellectual biography of Wu Teh-Yao, this talk focuses on how Wu’s intellectual and cultural negotiations in Cold War Taiwan were formative in shaping his educational philosophy and public life in Singapore.
