Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful, versatile, non-invasive, and non-destructive analytical technique that provides atomic-level insights into the structure, dynamics, interactions, profiling of molecules. It is widely used to study a broad range of molecular systems, from small organic compounds to biomacromolecules and their complexes. NMR has extensive applications including structural biology, drug discovery and repurposing, metabolomics, food science, polymer chemistry, and materials science. An NMR spectrometer uses a superconducting magnet to generate a strong, highly homogeneous magnetic field around the sample. Upon excitation with controlled radiofrequency (RF) pulses, NMR-active nuclei absorb energy and subsequently release characteristic signals as they return to equilibrium. These signals are detected and analysed to reveal information about physical, chemical, and biological characteristics.

The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facility in School of Biological Sciences (SBS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is equipped with three solution state NMR spectrometers ranging from 400 MHz to 700 MHz. It is established in 2005 and physically located in the NMR Room (SBS-B1n-03) situated in the SBS building. The NMR facility serves NTU research community and external research institutes with collaborations. Requests from other organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Typically after appropriate training, users are granted independent access to perform their own experiments. The NMR instruments are accessible 24 hours per day, year-round.

AVANCE NEO 700 MHz
(16.4 T) NMR Spectrometer

AVANCE NEO 700 MHz NMR spectrometer has five RF channels and is equipped with one 5 mm z-gradient quadruple resonance QCI H/C/N/F cryoprobe, 24 position SampleCase for automatic sample loading, and the Bruker Smart Nitrogen Liquefier (BSNL).

AVANCE II 600 MHz
(14.1 T) NMR Spectrometer

AVANCE II 600 MHz NMR spectrometer has four RF channels and is equipped with one 5 mm z-gradient TCI cryoprobe, one 5 mm z-gradient TXI probe and the BSNL.

AVANCE NEO 400 MHz
(9.4 T) Spectrometer

AVANCE NEO 400 MHz spectrometer has two RF channels and is equipped with one 5 mm z-gradient BBFO SmartProbe, one 5 mm z-gradient BBO probe, one 60 position SampleXpress automatic sample changer and the Bruker Nitrogen Liquefier (BNL).

NOTE:

  1. Charge rate is subject to change at the discretion of SBS without prior notice. The last rate change was in 2023.
  2. The above rates are before GST.
  3. For 600/700 MHz NMR spectrometers only: Minimum slot booking is 1 hour for safer spectrometer operation.
  4. For 600/700 MHz NMR spectrometers only: Accumulated bookings exceeding one week per month per spectrometer will receive a 20% discount (applicable only to the excess usage). Applies to all users.
  5. External users (not companies) having collaborations with NTU PIs will be charged at NTU rates.
  6. External users (companies) having collaborations with NTU PIs will be charged at External Company rates.
  7. NTU (non-SBS) users having collaborations with SBS PIs will be charged at NTU rates.
  8. Adjunct PIs in NTU will be charged at NTU rates.
  9. Charges for Service/Training/Technical Support:
    • S$40/hour for SBS users.
    • S$100/hour for NTU (non-SBS) users.
    • S$150/hour for external academic users (excluding companies, unless collaborating with NTU PIs).
    • S$250/hour for external companies (regardless of collaboration).
  10. Training is charged per person. Additional participants in the same group receive a 50% discount (not applicable to External Academic users).
  11. No independent access will be granted to external users (companies).

Procedures for Using the Spectrometers

  • Trained users should book NMR slots via the Central Equipment Booking System-FOM.
  • New users should contact the NMR Manager before use (see the contact information above).
  • Users are encouraged to contact the NMR Manager if they have any enquiries.
