Flexible Grading Option (FGO)

From AY2025/26 Semester 2 onwards, all undergraduate students — including both full-time and part-time students — will be eligible for the expanded Flexible Grading Option (FGO), beginning with the FGO declaration exercise in June 2026.

The enhanced FGO scheme includes the following changes:

  • Increased FGO quota:
Students will have an expanded FGO quota of either 21 AU or 24 AU, depending on their programme, compared to the previous quotas of 9 AU or 12 AU.
  • Greater flexibility in course eligibility:
FGO may now be declared for Major Core, Interdisciplinary Collaborative Core (ICC), and Major Prescribed Elective (MPE) courses, in addition to Broadening and Deepening Elective (BDE) courses.
  • Minimum letter-graded AU requirement for Major Core and MPE courses:
To ensure transcripts continue to reflect students’ mastery of their major discipline, programmes will require a minimum number of letter-graded AUs from Major Core and MPE courses for graduation.
    • Students may declare FGO for up to a combined total of 12 AU across Major Core, ICC, and MPE courses.
    • For MPE-BDE courses declared under FGO, the courses will no longer be automatically classified as BDEs. Students may choose during the FGO exercise whether the course should remain as an MPE or be reclassified as a BDE.
    • FGO remains unavailable for Final Year Projects and Professional Internship/Attachment courses.
    • Students must also satisfy their programme’s minimum letter-graded AU requirement for graduation, as specified in the Academic Handbook.
  • FGO quota deducted per course attempt:
The AU for every course attempt declared under FGO will be deducted from the student’s FGO quota, including previous attempts made since the start of the programme. For example, if a student declares FGO for a 3 AU course and subsequently retakes and re-declares FGO for the same course, a total of 6 AU will be deducted from the student’s quota.
  • Preservation of the Year 1 safety net:
Students previously covered under the Freshmen Year GPA Exemption will have those exempted courses automatically converted into FGO declarations and excluded from CGPA computation. While the Freshmen Year GPA Exemption scheme is being phased out, the expanded FGO framework applies across all years of study.
  • Recognition towards specialisations:
Courses declared under FGO may now count towards specialisations awarded at graduation.
  • Eligibility for Dean’s List and YGPA-based awards:
Eligibility for Dean’s List and other YGPA-based awards will now be assessed using the student’s raw YGPA before FGO adjustments are applied, instead of the post-FGO YGPA.
