Smart Textiles for Personalised Healthcare and Sustainability

On 4 March, Assistant Professor Ronghui Wu from NTU’s School of Materials Science and Engineering shared the health impacts of global warming, focusing on heat-related illnesses and discussed innovative wearable textile technologies for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. She highlighted a multi-scale materials engineering approach  from innovative fiber to fabric that integrates thermal management and sensing into textiles. Key innovations included advanced regenerated silk fibroin spinning, spectrum-selective fabrics for personalised radiative cooling, self-powered textile strain sensors for biomechanical and respiratory monitoring, and a smart wearable sign language translation system using yarn-based sensing and machine learning.
