Reshaping the Future of Construction with Architected Structures

On 17 March, Assistant Professor Wen Zhou shared her insights on the challenges that rapid urbanisation, expanding infrastructure, and climate change pose to modern cities. She introduced the concept of architected structural design as an emerging approach in the civil engineering field. By carefully designing the internal geometry of structures, engineers can tailor their mechanical behaviour and enhance performance. This approach enables structures to achieve improved strength, ductility, and energy absorption while using materials more efficiently. By integrating geometry, advanced materials, and digital fabrication, architected design opens new possibilities for developing high-performance and resource-efficient civil structures for future engineering needs.
