Reinventing Construction with 3D Printing Technology

On 19 May, SC3DP collaborated with The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) to co-organise a technical seminar focused on the construction sector. The seminar featured the 3D-printed pedestrian bridge near Jurong West, Singapore, as a case study demonstrating the practical implementation of large-scale additive manufacturing in infrastructure. Discussions explored how automated, layer-by-layer fabrication techniques are transforming the built environment by enabling greater design flexibility, improving construction efficiency, reducing material waste, and supporting more sustainable and customised building solutions.

The event featured a distinguished panel of speakers:
- “Advancing automated construction through large-scale 3D concrete printing”, Mr Tan Sze Tiong, Group Director of the Building & Research Institute (BRI) and Chief Sustainability Officer, Housing & Development Board (HDB);
- “Introduction to 3D concrete printing: principles, materials, and processes”, Professor Wong Teck Neng, Programme Director; SC3DP;
- “Fundamentals and printing quality control in 3D concrete printing”, Dr Li Mingyang, Senior Research Fellow, SC3DP;
- “3DCP: an innovative approach to the future of construction”, Mr Kennerve Tan, Senior Project Engineer, CES_Innovfab;
- “Enhanced efficiency and structural performance with metal 3D printing”, Dr Mehmet Cagirici, Senior Research Fellow, SC3DP;
- “Engineering the future: design and validation of load-bearing 3D concrete printed bridges” Mr Shaun Wu, Computational Design Specialist, Witteveen+Bos.
By bringing together SC3DP leadership, academic researchers, and industry partners, the event fostered interdisciplinary dialogue and strengthened collaborations, helping to bridge the gap between research innovation and practical implementation while advancing the adoption of additive manufacturing technologies in the built environment.
