Between 1976 and 1996, Mr Zainul Abidin served in various capacities in journalism including as Editor of Berita Harian, The Sunday Times, and Associate Editor of The Straits Times. He was seconded to the Council for the Development of Singapore Muslim Community (Mendaki) as its CEO from 1990 to 1993, and to Singapore Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) as its President from 1991 to 1996.

In 1997, Mr Zainul Abidin entered politics and was elected as MP for Cheng San GRC (1997 to 2001) and then Aljunied GRC (2001 to 2011). During this period, he was also appointed Executive Secretary of the Singapore Port Workers’ Union (1997 to 1998), General Manager of NTUC Fairprice Cooperative Ltd (1997 to 1998) and Senior Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1998 to 2001). He also held the post of Mayor of the Northeast Community Development Council (2001 to 2008). In 2004, he was appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and was promoted to Senior Minister of State 2 years later.

Mr Zainul Abidin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics and Malay Studies from the University of Singapore in 1971. ​​​​​​​





再努先生从1976年至1996年曾在新闻机构担任多项职务,包括了《Berita Harian》的总编辑、《海峡时报》星期天版的总编辑,以及新加坡《海峡时报》副总编辑。他也曾在这段期间被借调到新加坡回教社会发展理事会担任首席执行官 (1990年至1993年)以及新加坡伊斯兰宗教理事会担任主席(1991年至1996年)。

再努先生于1997年进入政坛,先后当选为静山集选区的国会议员(1997至2001)和阿裕尼集选区的国会议员(2001至2011)。在此期间,他还被任命为新加坡海港工友联合会执行秘书(1997年至1998年)、新加坡职工总会平价合作社总经理(1997年至1998年)以及新加坡外交部高级政务次长(1998年至2001年)。再努先生也曾于2001年至2008年)担任东北社区发展理事会市长。2004年,他被任命为新加坡外交部政务部长,并于两年后荣升为高级政务部长。 ​​​​​​​​

再努先生于1971年毕业于新加坡国立大学,获得经济学和马来语文荣誉学士学位。 ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
