Today, about 90 million tonnes of textile waste are being generated and disposed of annually, but only less than 1% of it is being upcycled. With the growing global fashion industry, which is known to be the second most polluting industry in the world, the amount of textile waste is expected to grow to over 134 million tonnes by 2030.

RGE-NTU Sustainable Textile Research Centre (RGE-NTU SusTex) has been setup on 4 Aug 2022 as a joint effort between RGE and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) to accelerate innovation in textile recycling. As part of RGE’s US$200 million commitment on next-generation textile fibre innovation and technology, the S$6 million research centre will draw upon the expertise of NTU scientists in the School of Materials Science and Engineering and the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering.

As Singapore’s first research centre dedicated to textile recycling, SusTex aims to develop new translatable technologies that can be deployed in urban settings like Singapore to transform textile waste into new, next-generation eco-friendly and sustainable textiles.

At SusTex’s inaugural launch, Guest-of-Honour for the event, Ms Grace Fu, Singapore Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, described the RGE-NTU SusTex as a “timely” initiative. The research will help the textile and fashion industry shift towards resource circularity and more sustainable means of production and recycling.

This 5-year partnership seeks to tackle the sizeable amounts of textile waste generated both globally and in Singapore through deployment of urban fit technologies. In line with Singapore’s Zero Waste vision and the Sustainable Living pillar of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, this effort will contribute toward the advancement of Singapore’s sustainable development with fashion circularity.

Vision

To be a GLOBAL LEADER in SUSTAINABLE TEXTILE RESEARCH and INNOVATIONS

We envision a future where textile waste is no longer an environmental burden but a resource for sustainable innovation. We believe that by harnessing advanced science, transformative engineering, and interdisciplinary collaboration, we can redefine the lifecycle of textiles—turning discarded materials into high-value, reusable resources. Our mission is to push the boundaries of circular material design and developing scalable solutions that minimize environment impact. Through relentless research, strategic partnerships, and bold innovation, we are not just solving today’s challenges—we are shaping the sustainable textile economy of the future.

Mission

TRANSFORMING the textile industry with CUTTING-EDGE research and CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES to champion ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP for a sustainable future

Our primary goal is to lead textile research through advancement of materials chemistry, green processes, and circular design to transform textile waste into high-value resources. We focus on fiber recovery and regeneration, eco-friendly decolorization, energy-efficient processing, integrating bioremediation and membrane-enabled water circularity to redefine sustainable textiles. We are building an urban-fit, closed-loop ecosystem that minimizes environmental impact and sets new industry standards.
