NTU MAE Hosts Inaugural Asia Mechanical Leaders Meeting (AMEL) 2025

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, hosted the inaugural Asia Mechanical Leaders Meeting (AMEL) 2025 on 21–22 August 2025

The meeting convened academic leaders from institutions across Asia:

  • Chulalongkorn University, Thailand

  • Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia

  • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong

  • Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea

  • University of Malaya, Malaysia

  • The University of Tokyo, Japan

  • Tsinghua University, China

Advancing Engineering Education and Research in Asia

The two-day programme focused on strengthening partnerships in mechanical engineering education and research, with discussions structured around three core themes:

  1. Exploring Research Areas for Asia Impact – Examining opportunities for collaborative research, industry partnerships, and faculty/researcher exchanges in key areas such as robotics, sustainable technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

  1. Student Experiential and Service-Learning Programmes – Sharing approaches to enhance undergraduate education through cross-border student projects, industry-linked learning, and service-based initiatives.

  1. Re-imagining Mechanical Engineering Education – Addressing the integration of sustainability, preparing graduates for an AI-driven future, and deepening engagement between universities and industry.

Strengthening Regional Collaboration

A Steering Committee will be established to oversee these initiatives. It was also announced that Tsinghua University will host AMEL 2026.

Professor Yeong Wai Yee, Chair of AMEL 2025, noted the importance of regional cooperation:

“The inaugural AMEL has created a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among Asia’s leading mechanical engineering institutions. By working together, we can better prepare future engineers to address global challenges through innovation, education, and research.”

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering extends its appreciation to all partner universities for their participation and contributions. NTU MAE looks forward to building on the outcomes of this meeting and advancing a stronger network of collaboration in mechanical engineering across Asia.
