The Best Opportunities Are Earned Long Before They Arrive

Advika Harvande Sandeep was drawn to Computer Engineering because she wanted to understand both hardware and software, rather than choosing one over the other. At NTU, that curiosity gradually evolved into a fascination with AI and how intelligent systems could solve real-world problems.

Rather than waiting for opportunities to find her, Advika sought them out.

She got involved in IEEE, took part in hackathons, pursued internships and immersed herself in projects that challenged her in different ways.

Each experience strengthened a different aspect of her development. Some sharpened her technical skills. Others taught her how to communicate ideas clearly, collaborate with others and adapt when plans changed.

As part of her university journey, Advika completed an internship at Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS).

Working alongside experienced engineers gave her a clearer understanding of professional software development. It also exposed her to the pace, expectations and collaborative nature of engineering in an industry setting.

Her capstone project, AlgoGPT, brought together many of the ideas that had shaped her time at NTU.

Developed under the supervision of Dr Owen Fernando, the AI-powered platform helps students visualise and understand algorithms by guiding them through problems rather than simply providing answers. Advika and her teammates also documented their work in an accompanying research paper.

The platform was deployed to around 1,000 students taking SC1007, one of CCDS's foundational modules. Today, a new team of students continues to refine and build on the project for future cohorts.

The Software Engineer position she applied for at HMGICS listed five to eight years of experience. On paper, she did not meet that requirement.

She applied anyway.

"I didn't technically meet that on paper," she said. "I just decided to try my luck and apply anyway since I met all the other requirements."

The team already knew how she worked.

They had worked alongside her during her internship and experienced first-hand how she approached problems, collaborated with colleagues and delivered her work. When the opportunity arose, they were able to make their decision based on far more than a résumé.

Today, Advika works as a Software Engineer at Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) – an opportunity she earned long before she submitted her application.

Looking across Advika's journey, a pattern emerges. Every leadership role, project and internship added something different. Together, they built the credibility that opened the next opportunity.

Because the best opportunities are rarely earned the day you submit an application.

They are earned, quietly and consistently, long before they arrive.
