Prof Guan Cuntai received the prestigious King Salman Award for Disability Research

Prof Guan Cuntai received the prestigious King Salman Award for Disability Research – Technical Branch on 4 December 2022.

The King Salman Award for Disability Research is an internationally recognized prize that is awarded to notable individuals who contributed to knowledge and scientific research in the field of disability and rehabilitation. The nominations were filed according to precise criteria represented by the size of the influence and classification of the scientific awareness publishing the scientific output. The Award received 370 applications from 46 countries this year. The previous awards were presented in 2014 and 2018, respectively.

Prof Guan received the Award due to his dedicated research to Brain-Computer Interface technologies and his significant contributions to several medical applications using brain-computer interfaces, such as stroke rehabilitation, ADHD treatment, cognition training, and mental health.

Professor Guan is a President's Chair Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He is the Director of the Centre for Brain-Computing Research, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, and Co-Director of S-Lab for Advanced Intelligence at NTU. He is an elected Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering (SAEng), an elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and an Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Professor Guan dedicated his research to Brain-Computer Interface technology with a strong interest to use the technology to treat, improve, or diagnose brain disorders. He has made significant contributions to several medical applications using brain-computer interfaces, such as stroke rehabilitation, ADHD treatment, cognition training, and mental health.  His scientific career has led to more than 380 journal and conference papers with total citations of more than 20,000. He holds 25 granted patents and applications. He licensed 15 patents and technologies to five companies. He is an internationally recognized leader in brain-computer interface research with over 70 keynote and invited talks. He is a recipient of many awards, including the first prize of the Annual BCI Research Award, IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award, etc.
