Congratulations to Asst Prof Shi Chao for receiving the 2023 Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award, from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
This prestigious award is presented to Asst Prof Shi for his paper “Development of Subsurface Geological Cross-Section from Limited Site-Specific Boreholes and Prior Geological Knowledge Using Iterative Convolution XGBoost” published in the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering in Sep 2021.
“This paper addresses a long-standing geotechnical challenge in subsurface stratigraphy by developing an image-based machine learning algorithm known as Iterative Convolution eXtreme Gradient. The algorithm renders the automatic development and updating of underground digital twins from sparse site-specific data and a single training image reflecting prior geological knowledge. The method has the potential to revolutionize current engineering practices and provides valuable input for subsequent analysis and design of critical infrastructures, facilitating the automatic conversion of sparse geodata into useful geological information and knowledge.”
