Research Brief

The research investigates how a younger generation of Chinese female media artists redefine Chinese femininity through their artistic practices. It focuses on artists born after the 1990s that grew up within the context of China’s post-socialist transformation, the one-child policy and the rapid development of new media and artificial intelligence.

From the perspective of media art, this study reconsiders Chinese femininity in contemporary art by tracing its historical transformations and examining how it has been shaped by social, cultural and technological changes. It aims to contribute to the fields of Chinese media art and feminist art history by offering a new perspective for understanding women’s art and Chinese femininity, providing reference and critical reflection for young female artists in an era of technological transformation.
