The Xi-Trump meeting de-escalated the trade war and temporarily stabilised China-US relations
The highly anticipated China–US leaders’ meeting in Busan took place on Thursday. After the talks, the US agreed to reduce and suspend some tariffs on Chinese goods, while China temporarily suspended export controls on rare earths and purchased US soybeans. Scholars noted that these moves were expected and may stabilise bilateral ties and markets in the near term, though deeper structural tensions remain. NTU’s Assoc Professor Dylan Loh observed that both sides highlighted outcomes favourable to themselves, adding that Trump is focused on issues important to domestic and agricultural constituencies.
