Older men in Singapore prefer to stay at home as they age; senior activity centres launch more masculine activities to attract them

According to data from senior activity centres, male participants only make up one-third of the participants in activities. Local senior activity centres are becoming aware of this phenomenon and are catering to their interests to encourage these older men to step out of their homes. NTU sociology’s Asst Prof Shannon Ang, pointed out that since the identity of older men is largely tied to their work, their social lives are more likely to be affected once they stop working. “In contrast, older women, who are accustomed to maintaining social networks unrelated to work, are less likely to experience this situation in their later years.”
