One day, two deals, same message: Old world order is dying

On Friday, two major trade agreements were concluded — a rapprochement between China and Canada, and a strategically charged pact between the United States and Taiwan. Both reflect adaptation to what Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called a “new world order,” a veiled reference to U.S. President Donald Trump’s volatile trade and foreign policies. Dylan Loh, an associate professor at NTU, told Bloomberg that Carney’s comments were “an endorsement of China and an indictment of the US,” adding that while this was not a formal break with Washington, “it will certainly displease Trump,” as talks loom over the future of the North American free trade pact.
