New Study Explores How Subway Expansions Affect Household Finances in Delhi

A study titled “Mortgages, Subways and Automobiles” by Asst Prof Chua Yeow Hwee (with Sumit Agarwal, Pulak Ghosh, Soumya Kanti Ghosh, and Liuyang She) has been published in the Journal of Public Economics.

The research examines how sustainable infrastructure investments, such as new subway lines, influence household financial behaviour. Focusing on Delhi, India, the study finds that households living near newly opened subway stations tend to improve their mortgage repayment performance and reduce spending on vehicles, especially among those with tighter budgets. These findings suggest that better public transport access can help families manage finances more effectively while promoting sustainable urban mobility.
