Let’s talk about men’s roles in violence against women

While stiffer penalties may deter some from committing violent and sexual offences against women, the issue cannot be solved with the law alone, nor is it helpful to focus too much on what more women can do to stop being these crimes, reporter Jean Iau wrote in an opinion piece. Instead, to understand violence against women, we also need to understand men's roles in such violence. Criminologist Olivia Choy, from NTU’s department of psychology, raises the biological factor in sexual offenders, referring to a study on paedophiles in Germany in 2017 to highlight that there is greater recognition that a combination of social, environmental and biological influences are at play.
