Flood damage - counting the cost - Opinion

Experts expect that as the Earth becomes warmer, flash floods may become increasingly more common and severe around the world, including in Singapore, especially with it being a low-lying city.

In an opinion piece, Prof Euston Quah, Albert Winsemius Chair Professor of Economics and director of the Economic Growth Centre at NTU, wrote: “Economics needs to be part of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts too, not just engineering. It's important to get a handle on not just where the damage is done or likely to be inflicted but also the cost of damage - and some of this is not so obvious. A study of economic damage costs is required, and continually updated so that informed decisions on public spending can be made on flood adaptation measures.”
