Five hot topics on the Parliament agenda this year

Parliamentary proceedings grabbed the spotlight last year, from a record-breaking marathon debate on Singapore’s foreign talent policy to explosive revelations behind lies told in the House. What on the agenda will make the headlines this year? One of the key issues likely to come up is the GST hike, which Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned in his 2022 New Year message. 

Asst Prof Walid Jumblatt Abdullah from NTU’s School of Social Sciences said he fully expects the opposition to be against the GST hike. He believes that from the Government’s perspective, now is the least politically bad time to raise the tax since it is a few years away from the next general election. “A few years could make the populace get accustomed to it, as much as it is possible to do so,” he said.
