Experts: Unlikely for the US to sanction China in the short term
At the forum ‘Decoding China’s Two Sessions’ organised by Business China and Lianhe Zaobao, NTU economics Prof Tan Kong Yam pointed out that the degree of Sino-US interdependence is much higher than US with Russia and that will defuse conflict between the US and China.
He opined that It is unlikely that the US will impose heavy sanctions against China compared to US – Russia relations. China, on the other hand, remains reliant on Western countries for critical products or services in areas such as semiconductors, aviation and finance, hence China must continue to exercise geopolitical restraint to avoid collateral damage from Western sanctions against Russia.
