China-US conflict: the importance of domestic economics and national cohesion

In a commentary, Prof Tan Kong Yam, Professor of economics at NTU and former Singapore Chief Economist and senior economist at the World Bank in Beijing, talks about US President Joe Biden’s fears of China being a key competitor of the US. He mentions how Americans are increasingly concerned that divisions and political polarisation at home have reached unprecedented levels. He contrasts it with how China is carefully managing social media to prevent dividing the country.
