Book Talk on Unease Sparks Meaningful Dialogue
The NTU School of Social Sciences recently welcomed members of its alumni and wider SSS community to a special alumni gathering featuring acclaimed sociologist and bestselling author Assoc Prof Teo You Yenn in conversation with Assoc Prof Walid Jumblatt Abdullah.
Centred on Prof Teo’s newly released book, Unease: Life in Singapore Families, the evening brought together SSS alumni, students and guests for an engaging dialogue on inequality, family life, parenting and the social realities shaping contemporary Singapore.
The gathering came amidst significant public interest surrounding Unease, which has drawn widespread attention through numerous interviews, public conversations and media features since its release. The book follows the enduring impact of Prof Teo’s earlier bestseller, This Is What Inequality Looks Like, which continues to shape national conversations on inequality, for some time after its publication.
This week, both books topped Singapore’s weekly bestseller charts, highlighting the impact and relevance of sociological conversations emerging from SSS@NTU.
The evening also included an informal discussion by Assoc Prof Walid Jumblatt Abdullah on his recent book, Why Palestine?: Reflections From Singapore, which has also received strong public interest and appeared on bestseller charts. This reflects how SSS faculty are contributing to important conversations on global and social issues.
