Advancing Research for a More Equal Society

How can research help us better understand inequality — and contribute to a more inclusive society?

At NTU School of Social Sciences, the Centre for the Study of Social Inequality (CSSI) is dedicated to examining how inequality emerges, persists across generations and shapes the lives and opportunities of individuals, families and communities.

Established in October 2024 as Singapore’s first research centre dedicated to the study of social inequality, CSSI brings together research on issues ranging from access to opportunities and social mobility to wealth and income disparities.

Led by Associate Professor Teo You Yenn, Director of CSSI, the Centre also seeks to take research beyond academia — connecting researchers, policymakers and the wider public, and making evidence and insights on inequality more accessible and relevant to society.

As featured in the NTU Giving Report 2025–2026, CSSI has received support from the Diana Koh Fund towards its research, operations and programmes. The support will enable the Centre to strengthen its capabilities and direct resources towards areas of greatest need as its work continues to grow.

At its heart, CSSI's work reflects what the social sciences — and Sociology in particular — can contribute: asking questions about the societies we live in, examining the structures and experiences behind them, and using research to deepen our understanding of the world around us.
