Indonesian leader does apparent U-turn on his authority to pick successor

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, during his annual State of the Nation address, stated that he needs more authority to determine the country's next leader. This contrasts with his earlier statements in 2023, where he had indicated plans to influence the upcoming elections from behind the scenes. He is utilizing his state speech to refute claims of direct involvement in coalition-building for the forthcoming presidential election, which could negatively affect his leadership. NTU Associate Professor of Sociology, Sulfikar Amir, noted that the President's intention might be to distance himself from these allegations. Additionally, Professor Sulfikar pointed out that the President's other statements suggest concerns about the possibility of future presidential candidates not continuing his ongoing projects.
