“Nothing in what he (has) said or done, at least publicly, would have indicated his impending removal from office – that is why there continues to be an information vacuum, which lends itself to plenty of speculation,” said Dr Dylan Loh, an assistant professor at the Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Public Policy and Global Affairs programme.

Experts interviewed by TODAY did not find any basis for removing Mr. Qin from office based on his actions or statements during his seven-month term. However, they noted that the abruptness of his ejection suggests it was triggered by recent and serious events. The fact that Beijing convened a session for his removal implies that the reasons behind it could be significant, potentially involving health issues, a conduct investigation, or a political mistake.
