China and US at sharp contradiction over Taiwan issue, high-level military engagement nowhere in sight

Asst Prof Dylan Loh, from NTU’s Public Policy and Global Affairs programme, said that some of the wordings in the briefings issued by both sides during Blinken's visit to China carried a conciliatory connotation. However, he added that the fundamentals of the US-China relationship have not changed. Both sides still have more differences than consensus. There is some room for concessions on both sides, but there are clearly some issues on which there can be no concessions, such as for Beijing, the Taiwan issue.
