​4,604 cases of sexual assault in the past 14 years, with almost 30 percent of them considered serious crimes

From 2005 to 2019, 4604 people were convicted of sexual assault crimes, such as rape, molest and child sex crimes, and 29 percent of these were considered grievous. Asst Prof Olivia Choy from NTU’s School of Social Sciences pointed out that the propensity to commit crimes has an environmental and biological basis. For example, sexual offences have been linked to differences in the structure of the offenders’ brains. She also said that other factors such as drug abuse and untreated mental conditions may also contribute to an offender’s likelihood of committing serious sexual crimes.
