Dr and Mrs Alex Tan Pang Kee Gold Medal for PhD in Chemistry

Born in Melaka, Malaysia, Dr Alex Tan Pang Kee obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of London and earned a PhD in Business Administration from Honolulu University, USA. He founded the specialty chemicals company Matex International Ltd in September 1989, and has served as its Managing Director for three decades. Under his leadership, Matex was listed on the Singapore stock exchange in 2004, and has grown into a major producer of quality dyestuffs, specialty chemicals, and other products, with operations in over 40 countries including Singapore, Malaysia, and China. Dr. Tan attributes the company's success to clear vision, deep Asian cultural roots, and emphasis on teamwork.

Mrs Alex Tan was born in Singapore, and worked at Singapore Polytechnic, an institution of higher learning in Singapore, contributing to its development for over 25 years.

The Dr and Mrs Alex Tan Pang Kee Gold Medal for PhD in Chemistry is awarded each year to the most outstanding graduating PhD student in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
