While learning through co-curricular activities (CCA) has been recognized as a component of “holistic education”, the reality is that when the going gets tough, CCA are the first to be advised to be discarded. Yet, because they tend to be what genuinely interests students, it would be a wasted opportunity if such authentic passion is not tapped upon. Based on this, a pedagogical scaffold has been developed and established in NTU – the Deeper Experiential Engagement Project (DEEP) scheme. First, a CCA that has the potential to be deepened through creative undertaking, e.g. an interest in cooking that may be deepened into recipe development, is matched to an academic discipline of relevance , e.g. biological sciences experimentation principles. Students are given the freedom to explore and fail, but their deliverables are structured around Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle to drive learning beyond simple co-curricular interests.
My research interest revolves around the practice and innovation associated with experiential learning driven by inherent personal interests not necessarily related to students' own academic discipline. Additionally, I work with the data scientists to develop intelligent agents that may guide a student through a personalized holistic learning journey.
