​INTERSECTIONS Newsletter by the Materials Research Society - Prof Subbu Venkatraman

We are pleased to highlight the biomaterials research conducted by Professor Subbu Venkatraman and his international collaborators, which has been featured in Issue 24 of the INTERSECTIONS Newsletter published by the Materials Research Society.

The team’s research has shifted the paradigm in the field of biomaterials and its application in cardiology. Examples of specific cardiovascular deficiencies include blockages in the blood vessels and congenital defects, leading to unwanted holes in the heart. By ingeniously employing materials, such as polymers, to address the issues, the collective efforts by the researchers have yielded biodegradable coronary stents and an ‘occluder’ device, which has formed the basis for materials-based innovations. As a result, a company – Amaranth Medical – was spun off in 2006 to lead these efforts.
