Closing the Gap: From Fundamental Materials Science to Translational Impact by Associate Professor Aravind Dasari
NTU MSE Seminar Hosted by Prof Alex Yan Qingyu
Abstract
My research journey over the last decade at NTU has been driven by a central question: how can fundamental understanding of material degradation, combustion, and fire response be translated into technologies that protect people and infrastructure? Starting from fundamental studies on polymers, composites, and flame-retardant mechanisms, our work has progressed beyond laboratory-scale discoveries to technology development, large-scale validation, regulatory accreditation, policy guidance, and commercial deployment. In this seminar, I will trace this pathway by articulating the scientific advances, technological innovations, and mentorship that made it possible to create societal impact.
Biography

School of Materials Science and Engineering
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Aravind obtained his PhD in 2007 from the Center for Advanced Materials Technology (CAMT), The University of Sydney, Australia, under the guidance of Professor Yiu-Wing Mai. Upon completion of PhD, Dr Dasari continued to work as a post-doctoral fellow at Sydney Uni before moving to the Madrid Institute of Advanced Studies of Materials (IMDEA Materials Institute) as a Research Scientist in early 2009 to lead the group on Multifunctional Nanocomposites. After a couple of years of exciting stint in Madrid, he joined NTU as an Assistant Professor in mid-2011. He is currently an Associate Professor at NTU. He is recognized as an authority on the flammability behavior of polymers and composites and is regularly engaged as an independent expert on these matters in investigative and consultancy projects.
