14 Aug 2025 11.00 AM - 12.00 PM NTU Lecture Theatre 3 Alumni, Public

Abstract

The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) plays a key role in shaping Singapore’s maritime research strategy. As the R&D arm of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), SMI drives new initiatives and manages national R&D programs through collaborative industry-academia partnerships, both in locally and internationally.
In this presentation, we will share how SMI serves as a one-stop maritime research knowledge hub, fostering impactful outcomes through public-private partnerships. We will also provide an overview of Singapore’s local maritime R&D ecosystem and highlight emerging research areas where we invite academic and industry partners to work with us in advancing innovation and supporting economic growth in the maritime sector.
Additionally, we will showcase selected examples of past and ongoing research projects — with an emphasis on materials-related work — that illustrate the highly multidisciplinary nature of Singapore’s maritime R&D landscape. We look forward to exploring new opportunities for collaboration with the materials science community.

Biography
The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) is a joint effort by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).
Established in April 2011, SMI develops strategies and programmes to achieve its mission with key focus areas in sectors such as port, shipping and maritime services. SMI charts the maritime research strategy and promotes greater industry-academia R&D collaborations to be undertaken in Singapore.
Through a whole-of-government approach, SMI drives initiatives with industry-wide impacts to enhance the overall competitiveness of the local maritime industry; and to strengthen research and development (R&D) capabilities in support of Singapore as a global maritime knowledge hub.
