SPring-8/SACLA: Status by Dr Tetsuya Ishikawa

An overview of the current status of Japan's flagship synchrotron radiation facility, SPring-8, and the X-ray free electron laser facility, SACLA will be presented. SPring-8 is a third-generation large-scale synchrotron radiation facility, and has begun upgrading it to a fourth-generation light source, with completion scheduled for 2029. The presentation will also introduce recent efforts toward a green society, including assessment of aging social infrastructure and applications to agriculture.

After receiving his doctorate from the University of Tokyo in 1982, he participated in the construction of the Photon Factory as a Research Associate at KEK and became an associate professor at the University of Tokyo in 1989. In 1995, he moved to the RIKEN SPring-8 Project and oversaw the construction of the SPring-8 beamlines. In 2006, he became the director of the RIKEN SPring-8 Center, a position he has held ever since. He led the SACLA construction project, subsequently contributed to the construction of NanoTerasu, and is currently working towards the construction of SPring-8-II.
