Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely used, but their safety issues have attracted increasing attention. The exothermic combustion of LIBs primarily originates from the burning of electrolytes. Therefore, developing high-safety flame-retardant electrolytes has become one of the critical research directions for LIBs. Aqueous electrolytes and fluorinated electrolytes have garnered attention due to their excellent flame-retardant properties. In this report, the authors introduce design and modification strategies for these two types of electrolytes, which effectively enhance the energy density and safety of lithium-ion batteries.

Chen Long, Professor, graduated with a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Fudan University in June 2016, under the supervision of Professor Yongyao Xia, then he joined the University of Maryland, USA for postdoctoral research in November 2016, under the supervision of Professor Chunsheng Wang. He was promoted to Assistant Researcher in July 2019, joined the School of Chemical Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology in January 2021, joining Professor Chunzhong Li's team. He was promoted to Professor in January 2024. His research focuses on electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and flow batteries. As first author (including co-first) and co-corresponding author, published several papers in Nat. Nanotechnol., Nat. Energy, Joule, Chem, Nat. Commun., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., etc. Cited over 13,500 times, H-index 47. He received the National Natural Science Fund for Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas), and Oriental Scholars of Shanghai Universities, selected into Shanghai Overseas High-Level Talent Introduction Program. He serves as a young editorial board member for Energy Materials Advances, Susmat, Chinese Chemical Letters.
