Abstract

Safety has long been a major barrier for the application of new energy. Learning from the history and evolution of steam and nuclear power may provide valuable insights into developing a reliable pathway toward the safe application of hydrogen energy. The lecture summaries the process how our human being conquer the ‘evil’ power to become the ‘angel’, the human benign energy. Emphases are laid on the safety technology innovation, harmonizing standards and encouraging polies, and improving public perception and acceptance. In particular, recent research progresses in inherent safety technologies are reviewed and opportunities are discussed.  

Biography

Professor Shan-Tung Tu

Shan-Tung Tu received his B.Eng degree in 1982 and Ph.D degree in 1988 from Nanjing Tech University. He is a professor of mechanical and chemical engineering, East China University of Science and Technology. Prior to this, he worked in Nanjing Tech University and East China University of Science and Technology as a professor and Vice President, and a guest scientist to The Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. He was elected as a member of The Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019.
He is the author of 450 papers with a total number of citations of more than 20,000 times. He received a number of distinguished awards, including the China National Science and Technology Progress Award, the National Technology Invention Award, the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the ASME Best Paper Award and so on. He has been a fellow of The Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China, the honorary president of the Chinese Pressure Vessel Institute (since 2010), and the honorary president of the Chinese Materials Institution of the China Mechanical Engineering Society (since 2015), the Chairman of the China Structural Integrity Consortium, the Chairman of the Asian Oceanic Regional Committee of the International Council for Pressure Vessel Technology, a member of the Reliability Committee of the IFToMM and an exective member of Global Power and Propulsion Society. Currently he is also an honorary professor of the University of Nottingham, UK.
