Chemistry and Application of MOF/PCP as Soft Porous Crystals

Abstract
As the promising materials to address global issues of clean energy technologies and environmental sustainability, the emerging class of crystalline microporous materials, porous coordination polymers (PCPs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs),1 have been applied in fields of gas storage and separation, delivery vessel, sensors, catalysis, supercapacitors, FETs, batteries, proton conduction, and so on. We have found the 3rd generation (3G) PCPs/MOFs2 (Soft porous crystals, SPCs 3) that possess flexible or dynamic porous frameworks and reversibly respond to external stimuli, not only chemical but also physical, unlike robust PCPs/MOFs (2G).4,5 In particular, by controlling the local motion of organic ligands that construct the framework, we discovered and developed an effective mechanism for separating gas mixtures with very similar properties, such as oxygen/argon,6 and light water/heavy water isotopologue mixtures.7

Professor Susumu Kitagawa
Susumu Kitagawa obtained a Ph.D. degree at Kyoto University and is now a Distinguished Professor at Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study (KUIAS) and Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS). He serves as Kyoto University's Executive Vice-President for Research Promotion. Kitagawa pioneered the Chemistry of porous coordination polymers (PCPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), predicting their flexible framework, and developing applications in gas storage, separation, and conversion. He coined the term "soft porous crystals" (SPC), catalyzing a field now integral to materials chemistry. Kitagawa envisions a future where porous materials drive advancements across environmental, energy, resource, and health sectors, labeling the 21st century the "age of gas." His contributions have garnered numerous accolades, including awards from the Chemical Society of Japan, The Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Japanese Government, the Japan Academy Award, and Chemistry for the Future Solvay Prize. Kitagawa's impact extends through memberships in the Japan Academy, Foreign Member of the Royal Society, and significant recognition as a highly cited researcher every year from 2014 to 2022 (Thomson Reuters and Clarivate Analytics).
