From despair to hope: An aspiring doctor’s path forward

Once uncertain of his career path, Yu Wei’s journey to medical school shows how belief and support can transform a life.

NTU student Tan Yu Wei tells his story here.

“Looking back, I felt like I had fallen into life’s deepest pit, with nowhere to go but up,” said Tan Yu Wei, now a Year 2 student at NTU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine).

Although he had dreamed of becoming a doctor since young, early academic setbacks left him questioning his abilities and uncertain about his future. What once felt like a clear calling began to seem out of reach.

What changed the course of his journey was not just perseverance, but the unwavering support of those around him – mentors who guided him, parents who stood by him, and donors who believed in his potential when he struggled to believe in himself.

Today, Yu Wei, a recipient of the Ong Hok Tien Scholarship, is pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor, not because the journey was easy, but because others made it possible.

His story is a reminder that behind every student’s success is a community that lifts them up.

Be the reason someone finds their footing again. With your support, another student like Yu Wei can rediscover hope and achieve their aspirations.
