Professor Harcharan Singh (1941 – 2020)

It is with great sadness that we hear the passing of Professor Harcharan Singh (1941-2020) , our beloved Founding Dean, School of Applied Science (SAS), now known as School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) on 16 December 2020.

Prof Singh was the first Dean of the school that was established 32 years ago in 1988 and he served in this capacity till 2002. Prof Singh had formed the school, originally named as the School of Applied Sciences (SAS), together with just 6 faculty and a few technicians. He successfully implemented the Bachelor degree in Computer Technology, the first of its kind in Singapore, with a pioneer batch of about 140 students.

During his fourteen years as Dean, Prof Singh was an inspirational leader who was unwavering in his dedication to establishing a strong foundation for the new school that will go on to train thousands of youth and Singapore’s workforce in computer science and engineering.

Our prayers, thoughts and deepest condolences goes out to his family and to all who were touched by his enthusiasm, generosity and kindness. We will miss him dearly.
