Isaac Hong Zhang Jie: Data, Defence, and Dedication

From a beginner in coding to a double Gold Medalist – the DSTA and Yoozoo Gold Medals – Isaac Hong Zhang Jie’s story is one of steady growth, conviction, and gratitude.
“For me, these awards mean much more than academic recognition,” Isaac shares. “They reflect God’s grace, as well as the unwavering support of my parents, professors, and friends.” It’s a sincere acknowledgement of the people and moments that shaped his undergraduate journey.
When Isaac first enrolled in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) programme at NTU, he was stepping into new territory. Coming from a non-computing background, he appreciated how thoughtfully structured the curriculum was.
“The courses helped students like me build our understanding from the ground up, without rushing through the basics,” he says. This combination of practical skills and theoretical knowledge became a solid foundation for him.
One experience stood out in particular. During his first year, Isaac took the “Introduction to Data Science and Artificial Intelligence” module, where his group tackled a group project analysing shopper profiles and demographics.

“It was an open-ended project, so we chose our own topic. We used the techniques we’d learned to segment customer profiles and recommend tailored advertising strategies,” he explains.
That hands-on experience sparked something in him. “It gave me a glimpse into the work of a data scientist, and I realised how exciting it is to uncover meaningful insights from data.”
As the pace of technological change accelerates, Isaac is mindful that what he’s learned extends beyond specific techniques or tools. “The most important skill is the ability to learn and grasp concepts quickly,” he reflects. “The DSAI programme taught me how to keep up with new developments and learn new skills independently, which is essential in such a fast-changing field.”
Now, as he steps into his next chapter as a researcher at DSO National Laboratories, Isaac looks forward to applying his skills in service of something bigger than himself. “I’m excited to contribute to Singapore’s national defence,” he says simply. “To tackle real-world challenges and make meaningful contributions in this critical field.”
